"The Use of Force"

The story "The Use of Force" tells about the conflicting feelings of the doctor's professionalism, his sympathy and anger towards a small naughty girl. The doctor came into the house to the family to diagnose deadly disease the diphtheria in a small patient. And then the battle began. Usually the patient who comes to the doctor must fully obey the standard examination. However, this little devil simply rejects the doctor's help or the treatment of the disease.

The child completely refutes in this situation the dominance of the doctor over her. So sometimes a doctor wants to get out of himself, beyond his professionalism and use force. The girl gave struggles to the doctor and her parents, who tried to open her mouth. She did not give up. Emotional conflict between a girl and a doctor opened up a bigger problem of inner struggle of the savior of lives. On the one hand, he wanted to save this little girl from a terrible illness, but her behavior enraged him and at the same time delighted her perseverance.

Of course, the patient during the examination should behave correctly and always follow the doctor's instructions, even in the case of children. But sometimes the truth is a little patient reflexively afraid of doctors because they think that people in white coats will hurt or kill them. As this little girl thought in the story. It created the conflict between the doctor and his career duty whether he should use force or come back another time, but he decided not to give up because it was necessary for the diagnosis.

  1. I did not see Mathilda as a spoiled naughty girl instead I saw her as a girl that knew what she had, but was trying desperately to hide it because she was afraid. Whereas I agree with you that the doctor was in conflict with his duty as a doctor, I believe that duty took a back seat to the desires of the doctor wanted to win in this situation no matter the cost.
